  Research Field:

My research has focused on studying how monoamine oxidase (MAO), a very important enzyme in the human body that regulates the levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, influences neural stem cell growth and proliferation.  I have cultured primary stem cells from embryonic and postnatal mice that have had MAO isoforms A and B knocked out at the gene level.
From these cultures, I have studied parameters of proliferation, gene expression of neurotransmitter receptors, and other various proteins that play a role in governing the cell cycle.
From these data, I hope to learn more about how neurotransmitters play a role in brain development, with implications ranging from early embryonic stages through adulthood.
